Khantoke is a Lanna Thai tradition by kaimu662

A khantoke (Thai: ขันโตก, ) is a pedestal tray used as a small dining table by Lanna people (northern Thai),

Khantoke are used as dining furniture to keep food served at a higher level than the ground at special occasions such as wedding parties, funerals, housewarming parties, and temple festivals. The range of foods that can be served at a khantoke dinner is unlimited.

Sitting down to a well-presented meal of good and delicious food is something to enjoy.  and finger foods. Finger foods? Eating with one’s fingers? Considered as neither polite nor hygienic in some circles, eating with the fingers is as old as the human race. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it, as all do it perhaps without thinking.

In Thailand, many people still eat with their fingers and this has nothing to do with social strata. It depends, rather, on the place, the occasion and the meal that is being served. A Thai hostess will follow a set etiquette when offering a meal that will be eaten with the fingers, and those eating will be polite and delicate as they partake of the meal.

Khantoke is an Lanna Thai tradition, not just something invented for tourists’ amusement. Thai Lanna was a civilized Kingdom that existed in the area of present-day northern Thailand. King Mengrai was the king who founded the capital and the dynasty. He accomplished and contributed to the prosperity of the kingdom in several aspects, e.g. political science, Buddhist religion, art, and culture.

Five different dishes are served along with a basket in which rice has been steamed. A brief explanation of the food served follows: “Gaeng Hung-Lay”, Burmese pork curry; “Gai Tawd” fried chicken; “Paad Pugg”, fried vegetable (usually cabbage); and “Naam Prik Ong” pork tomato-chili paste, mildly hot, served with fresh cucumber slices; “Kaeb Moo”, pork rind, which are for dipping with paste; along with these food dishes, a starter or canape should be included, e.g. fried banana. Dinners can use fingers to break off pieces of sticky rice and dip it into the various bowls instead of using cutlery. Dessert is popped rice crackers, coffee or tea and a bit of “miang” which is a chew similar to beetle nut but you won’t have the cosmetic effect of red lips.
