Asia Center Foundation (ACF) helps disadvantaged children through different programs from 3 to 18 years old. From a pre-school, to sports programs, ACF enables children to develop themselves in many ways.

Why are so many children out of school?

Children who live in extreme poverty face many barriers to education including:

  • Child labor or having to work to add to the family income, or care for younger siblings
  • Low family income and therefore inability to afford school fees or supplies
  • Disruptive family circumstances (death, divorce, children left with grandparents)
  • No birth certificates

What is ACF doing to help disadvantaged children gain access to quality education?

Asia Center Foundation created many programs to help children and their parents deal with difficult situations for Thai and Burmese children from 3 to 18 years old. These include:

  • The Patong Childcare Center for 3 to 6 year old children from Patong and Kathu area provides them a safe, secure environment where they can learn (many for the first time) to follow a set routine, to obey rules, to develop their creativity and to behave in a social environment with children of their age.
  • Scholarship Program for children between 7 to 18 in the Phang Nga and Phuket provinces provides support and encouragement to families facing financial and social problems whose children benefit from the scholarship program.
  • Full care in a “safe house” called Ban Sii Som for children whose home environments are not safe or suitable for children.
  • JumpStart Learning Center for Burmese children who come from at-risk and poor families and for various reasons, who cannot attend Thai government schools.
  • The ACF Youth Program that focuses on Primary school students varying between the ages of 8 and 12 serves as a platform for life skills training, leadership and sports development.

Couple days ago went to Wat Chalong Buddhist Temple to photograph the Lotus Pond. To my surprise not one lotus or water lily left. Only the invasive Water Hyacinth. Killed off all the Lotus plants.

Eichhornia crassipes, commonly known as common water hyacinth, is an aquatic plant native to the Amazon basin, and is often a highly problematic invasive species outside its native range.
When not controlled, water hyacinth will cover lakes and ponds entirely; this dramatically affects water flow, blocks sunlight from reaching native aquatic plants which often die. The decay processes depletes dissolved oxygen in the water, often killing fish (or turtles). The plants also create a prime habitat for mosquitos.

In my yard have a lotus or a, water lily pond. Jaeb and I bought this . I have been calling it Lotus. So I decided to do some research about lotuses.

I live in Thailand which is Buddhist and the Lotus is a important symbol. Also Lotus and I call now water lilies are all over. At the temples and next to the rice fields. So by ignorance I just called them all Lotus.

When I started my research some YouTube videos said that all lotus leaves and flowers elevated above the water. All lilies leaves and flowers floated on the surface! I have seen that is not true!

Below is from Wikipedia. Reference to lotus..
while the leaves float on top of the water surface or are held well above it

The one feature I have seen is the lotus leaves, the stem is in the middle and with lilies their is a cleft on the leaf.

Lotus below is a nelumbo nucifere

This is a very important flower in Buddhist.
The flowers are sacred in Thai culture, a predominantly Buddhist society and are also used in traditional Thai medicine, cooking, and cultural celebrations. The lotus is a symbol of purification and enlightenment in Buddhism, rising clean and fragrant above the mud in which it is rooted.

Wikipedia is my source.

As you can see they often call lotus also water lily.

Nelumbo nucifera, also known as Indian lotus, sacred lotus, bean of India, Egyptian bean or simply lotus, is one of two extant species of aquatic plant in the family Nelumbonaceae
seeds may remain viable for many years, with the oldest recorded lotus germination being from that of seeds 1,300 years old
The lotus is often confused with the water lilies (Nymphaea, in particular Nymphaea caerulea“blue lotus”
while the leaves float on top of the water surface or are held well above it. The flowers are usually found on thick stems rising several centimeters above the leaves.
Researchers report that the lotus has the remarkable ability to regulate the temperature of its flowers to within a narrow range just as humans and other warmblooded animals
An individual lotus can live for over a thousand years.
As mentioned earlier, the traditional Sacred Lotus is only distantly related to Nymphaea caerulea, but possesses similar chemistry.

Nymphaea caerulea, known primarily as blue lotus (or blue Egyptian lotus), but also blue water ilily (or blue Egyptian water lily), and sacred blue lily, is a water lily in the genusNymphaea.
The leaves are broadly rounded, 25–40 cm (10–16 in) across, with a notch at the leaf stem. The flowers are 10–15 cm (4–6 in) in diameter.
The leaves grow from the rhizome on long petioles. Most of them float on the surface of the water. The blades have smooth or spine-toothed edges, and they can be rounded or pointed. The flowers rise out of the water or float on the surface

I think sometimes using both works or names in identifying the plant.

As a photography using both names in describing.

As I love photographing them.
