Time of year: Late October 2016

Purpose of trip: As part of our round the world trip, we were determined to see Halong Bay. In reality, that is best done by an overnight junk cruise.

p1010751Why we chose this place: Halong Bay is unlike anything else, with thousands of limestone mountains rising from the sea. This provides a stunning backdrop and a chance to view the unique lifestyles of the fishermen and their families who spend their entire life on the sea.

We chose the Dragon Legend II (operated by Indochine Junk), because it had great Tripadvisor reviews and it’s a large (therefore sociable) and luxurious (which we felt we needed at this stage in our trip) boat.

How long we stayed: We organised an extended trip with Indochine Junk which included an airport pickup, a night in the lovely Hanoi Pearl hotel, transport down to Halong and…

All of these places I frequent often for take out or buy fresh fruit. All are close together and in Chalong, 4 are close to Chalong traffic circle.

The first one is very small and most customers are Thai.

They have papaya salad and the fish is always fresh. I have bought fish at other street vendors where they sold me old fish. Not here, always fresh.

Chalong Market

It is across the street from Chalong police station. Depending on the day can be lots of food vendors or just a few. Also other shops there for clothing

Fresh fruit

Small fruit stand across the street of Chalong Market. Small vendor but good prices and I have always helped me pick ripe fruit.

Phuket Floating Market in Kathu Thailand is not actual a floating market like in Bangkok.

It open this summer and is a unique shopping center fashioned after Asian floating markets. Plenty of shops and food stalls . Has entertainment. The afternoon I was there, the market was slow with few buyers or tourist. But lot of shops.

Restaurants food stalls

I was disappointed with selection or choices. I did not see that many and I walked the whole market. There is a large food court at the back. Some are located next to the water.

At the entrance is a stage for live shows.

Plenty of parking and set up for tour buses.

I understand in the future will have a night market 10pm till midnight with comic statues

Kathu Phuket Thailand

I first tried this over 10 years ago on my second trip to Thailand. At a friend’s home and they offered it. I was nervous about picking it up because of the “spines” actual they are very soft.

You peel open the soft skin and a soft fruit is inside. Sweet and I think taste little like a grape.

There is a seed inside that I throw away.

From Wikipedia

The fruit is a round to oval single-seededberry, 3–6 cm (rarely to 8 cm) long and 3–4 cm broad, borne in a loose pendant cluster of 10–20 together. The leathery skin is reddish (rarely orange or yellow), and covered with fleshy pliable spines, hence the name, which means ‘hairs’. The fruit flesh, which is actually the aril, is translucent, whitish or very pale pink, with a sweet, mildly acidic flavor very reminiscent of grapes.[4]

The single seed is glossy brown, 1–1.3 cm, with a white basal scar.[4] Soft and containing equal portions of saturated and unsaturated fats,[7] the seeds may be cooked and eaten. The peeled fruits can be eaten raw, or cooked and eaten: first, the grape-like fleshy aril, then the nutty seed, with no waste.
