Welcome to Wat Phra Mahathat, one of the most important temples in Thailand as well as one of the oldest. The date of construction is still not clear but it is one of only six primary Royal temples. What is known is that the Phra Borom That Chedi, at the centre of the complex, pre dates the outer buildings by about 600 years!
It is said that the Chedi contains relics of Buddha brought over from Sri Lanka 2000 years ago, hence the importance of this temple.
Surrounding the large central chedi are 158 smaller pagodas.
