Festival of Lights


How lucky I am to be in Laos for Boun Ok Phansa, the end of Buddhist lent as well as Lhai Heua Fai, the festival of lights. Ever since I was a little girl I remember seeing pictures of people hoisting up lanterns into the sky, feeling envious of their ability to send their sorrows and prayers up to the heavens. As luck may have it, my time has finally come, and I will get to send my own wishes both up to the sky, as well as down the Mekong River.

The recent buzz around the city cannot be described. Everywhere you look hand made lanterns are being constructed as well as boats that will be slowly pushed out to the river. The markets are full of marigolds and candles to be purchased for the big night, as well as small boats and lanterns for those not so handy…
